Time to THRIVE
Not Just Survive
You are stronger than you know and more than capable. When I teach Empowerment Self-Defense, the goal isn't to merely survive an attack. It is also about coming out of a situation like that and being able to thrive after. It isn't the physical act that can break you. It is what happens to you emotionally and physically after an attack or an assault.
When taking this course YOU get to be the hero or SHERO of YOUR Story!
Looking at common attacks women have to face, I pulled the moves that were effective while wearing everyday clothing to create workshops and courses which I know to be effective and has saved lives. This course has one attack per video to which you will learn multiple counter attacks but it goes beyond that. Self-Defense isn't just about physical moves. It is about preventative action.
This course is based on 20 years of of experience dissecting multiple styles of martial arts and self-defense including: 7 styles of Japanese Martial Arts, Tai Chi, along with doing Warrior Spirit Training with Sylvester Stallone’s Trainer, Jeff Alexander and most recently Empowerment Self-Defense with ESD Global and IMPACT Global.
We compiled the most common attacks that you are likely to face, and have devised several counter attacks to each one. Additionally, self-defense is more than just attacks and counters. It is more than just physical responses and moves. It is also your situational, social, and emotional awareness. It is about learning how to set clear boundaries and how to de-escalate situations before they start. We pulled the best tools, strategies, and choices to create workshops and courses which will be effective and can save lives.
This course has one attack per video to which you will learn multiple counter attacks. It also has learning modules for Self-Empowerment, Boundary Setting, De-Escalation, Awareness, and Emergency Safety.

Lesson #1: Wrist Grabs
While a wrist grab may not seem so scary, it is often a gateway to more aggressive tactics used by a partner or spouse. We are starting out with wrist grabs because several of the moves learned in this lesson can be utilized in other forms of attack.
In this module, you will learn about 1 handed, 2 handed, and double wrist grabs.
Lesson #2: Lapel Grab
Lapel could also mean someone grabbing your shirt, someone grabbing your jacket, or someone even grabbing your chest or attempting to grope you.
In this module, you will learn how to escape from a lapel grab.
Lesson #3: Stranglehold
One in four women will experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime, and of those, up to 68 percent will suffer near-fatal strangulation at the hands of their partner.
In this module, you will learn several different ways to handle a stranglehold. These are choices, as there is no one right way to do anything. Your experience is unique to you. Thus, you deserve options.
Lesson #4: Bear Hug
One of the most common questions I have in classes is, "What do you do if someone grabs you from behind." It can be very scary to be grabbed from behind. You didn't see it coming.
In this module, you will learn several counters to bear hug attacks and attacks from behind. Again, these are options and continued practice is key.
Lesson #5:
Against the Wall
Worried about being pinned to a wall? I get this a lot from women in my classes, "What if they are bigger than me?" They may be bigger and stronger, but you will have something they do not.
In this module, you will learn counters to handle an against the wall attack. You have options, choices. Look for solutions. Don't dwell on the problems.
Lesson #6: Hair Grab
Whether it is workplace violence, a school fight, or incident between friends, hair grabs are a common attack, especially if you have long hair.
In this module, you will learn several counters to handle a hair grab. Remember, for every negative there is a positive!
Lesson #7: Floor Attack
That's right, the floor is attacking you but seriously, an attack on the ground feels more ominous than most. One of the main reasons I launched my first online course was due to a client sharing how she was assaulted at knife point in her dorm room. When I showed her possible choices in that circumstance she said she felt empowered and that every woman needed this. I agreed! So, when she suggested I make online courses for women, I took on the task in 2018, far before Online Courses became a necessity.
In this module, we will cover several escape techniques to enable to you to get away from an against the floor scenario.
Lesson #8 (BONUS):
5-Principles of Self-Defense
In this module, you will learn the 5 Principles of Self-Defense:
THINK, YELL, RUN, FIGHT, TELL.
They are guiding tools to circumnavigate violence before it starts, address violence when it is happening, and find support after an attack has occurred. We don't want to get into a fight, but if it did happen, don't you want to be prepared?
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the Instructor?
Aloha, For the past 20 years of my life, I have studied self-defense in a multitude of ways. I did this because there was a time in my life when I found myself the victim and I wanted to be the victor. So I trained. I trained in 7-styles of Japanese martial arts (My main style was Aikido and I cross trained in Ninjutsu, Shotokan, Jujitsu, Iaido, Kobudo, & Bojutsu). I took Tai Chi and Warrior Spirit Training with Jeff Alexander who was Sylvester Stallone's Trainer for the Rocky series. In my pursuit to find the perfect blend of all of these styles, I came upon Empowerment Self-Defense -- A 40-year evidence based curriculum designed by women for women and other vulnerable communities. Since 2019, I have been certified to teach Empowerment Self-Defense, merging it with my 20 years of experience to deliver this course to you. I wanted to design this course to educate, to elevate, to inspire, to advocate, & to empower. Offering my knowledge through survivorship and lived experiences is the greatest gift I could give you.
To those who have never had to live through an attack, my hope is that this aids you when you need it, that this course gives you a foundation to thrive. For those who have survived an attack and are reading this, I am with you and I am rooting you on. May this course give you valuable tools to empower yourself, to live freely, love openly, be vulnerable, and show your strength when you need to and I hope this course bring you a step closer on your healing journey. I am rooting for you.
Do you offer refunds?
This course is an investment, as are you! Refunds are available within the first week. However, the proceeds from this course go towards supporting women, girls, and other vulnerable communities. Once you make your purchase, it is tallied and goes to sales goals which upon reaching supports people who otherwise cannot socioeconomically pay for these services. You not only offer a gift to yourself. You offer it to someone in need. Thus, after the first week, all sales are final.
What style of Self-Defense are you?
Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) is not a Martial Arts style, it is a violence prevention strategy utilizing a 40-year evidence-based research-based curriculum by women for women and other vulnerable communities. The tools in ESD were combined with 20 years of martial arts experience and self-defense experience from several different modalities including 7 styles of Japanese Martial Arts, Tai Chi, Warrior Spirit Training, IMPACT, and ESD.
What is the difference between Martial Arts and Self-Defense?
Martial Arts is considered Self-Perfection training while Self-Defense training is Self-Preservation training. The difference being, Martial Arts is meant for personal improvement and growth and Self-Defense training is meant to be functional and effective in high risk, high-stress situations. The techniques learned in Self-Defense training are not meant to compete with nor negate the validity of Martial Arts instruction as the two serve their own unique purposes in an individuals life. Self-Defense teachings’ primary goal is to provide tactics and techniques that will support people in their efforts to survive a potential attack.
Is this a Martial Arts style?
No, although it encompasses different moves from Martial Arts styles that Tasha Church has practiced.
Do I need certain tools to train and practice?
No, but it is good to have a safe space to practice. It is your choice where you choose to practice and it is important for you to remove possible dangers, things that you could trip on, to let people know that you are practicing self-defense and you’re going to be making noise. Finding a safe location for you to be able to practice is paramount and it is your choice where you choose to do this practice. Please see the disclaimer before carrying on.
What are The 5-Principles of Self-Defense?
It’s THINK, YELL, RUN, FIGHT and TELL if you want more information, check out lesson one of the I.M.Power course.
Do I need to complete the entire course?
Part of the process of empowerment is doing what you feel is best for you. The curriculum from this course has saved lives countless times over and has been an amazing tool for boosting confidence self-esteem body image, setting healthy boundaries, and making plans for preventative action. It is your choice as to whether or not you’d like to finish this course.
Who are her instructors?
One of the first questions often asked when you see a self-defense course is who did this person train with? What are their sensai's names? Why are they qualified to teach is usually what the skeptic in us asks. We get it. We do this too and find it important for people to ask. Tasha has practiced multiple styles of martial arts and self-defense over the past 20 years. She shares her instructors in ESD her bio. For Aikido, and her Japanese Martial Arts styles, she trained at the Martial Arts Alumni Association in Washington State. Her Aikido instructor was Sensai Venus Coburn.
As shared, Tasha currently is a practitioner of ESD and trains in martial arts through the Berkshire Hills Aikido Dojo under her instructors Ron Ragusa & Mary Eastland.
